The removal was included in the EPA's project to clean up PCB-laden sediments in the Kalamazoo River as part of an the 80-mile Allied Paper/Portage Creek/Kalamazoo River Superfund site, listed on EPA's National Priorities List in August 1990. Polychlorinated biphenyl (PCBs) leftover from processes at paper mills operating on the river beginning in the 1950s is the primary concern targeted in the cleanup.
