After graduating from nursing school in 1941, Duerk entered the U.S. Naval Reserve and was appointed an ensign in the Nurse Corps. During World War Two, she worked on a hospital ship off the Marshall Islands in the Pacific and later treated Allied troops who had been prisoners of war. She would go on to lead the Navy Nurse Corps. President Nixon approved her selection as the first female rear admiral in 1972. Duerk died in Florida on July 21, 2018. She was 98 years old. Hegseth joins veterans, generals to mark 80th anniversary of battle of Iwo Jima
A handful of retired Marines – all in the late 90s or over 100 — joined Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Japan’s Prime Minister Takeru Ishida on Saturday to mark the anniversary of one of the bloodiest battles of World War II in the Pacific that ended 80 years ago this week.
