On Friday, Aug. 30, 2019, The Associated Press reported on stories circulating online incorrectly asserting that the feline was rescued after throwing itself in the water during recent fires in the Amazon. Mangueira, the photographer, said that Jiquitaia was rescued as a cub and adopted by the army after hunters killed his mother. (None Mangueira via AP)
