Authorities in Northern California say deputies destroyed a sprawling opium poppy field that could have produced at least four pounds of heroin per year. The Monterey County Sheriff's Office says deputies over the weekend destroyed 27,000 plants growing on private land and another 16,500 plants that had been harvested. A handful of retired Marines – all in the late 90s or over 100 — joined Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Japan’s Prime Minister Takeru Ishida on Saturday to mark the anniversary of one of the bloodiest battles of World War II in the Pacific that ended 80 years ago this week.
