A jury on June 21, acquitted Heaggan-Brown of first-degree reckless homicide in the killing of Sylville Smith, a black man, on Aug. 13, 2016. Like Smith, Heaggan-Brown is also black. Criminal law experts said the institutional deference shown to police officers by jurors and the general public isn't about an officer's race.
