This April 19, 2010 photo shows tulips blooming at Thomas Jefferson's Monticello near Charlottesville, Va. Timing is important when planting spring-blooming bulbs in the autumn. They need a chance to take root. Bulbs bloom best in spring when planted in autumn soils that have cooled to at least 55 degrees. The more chilling they get, the better the quality of the bloom and the longer their stem length. Refrigerate the bulbs for a time before planting if you live in the South. (Dean Fosdick via AP)
