A statue of Don Knotts sits on High Street in Morgantown, W.Va., date not known. Sculptor Jamie Lester created the statue. Knotts, a Morgantown native who died in 2006, is best known as the actor who portrayed deputy Barney Fife on "The Andy Griffith Show" during the 1960s, a role in which he won five Emmy awards, but this is not a statue of the hilarious deputy. A handful of retired Marines – all in the late 90s or over 100 — joined Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Japan’s Prime Minister Takeru Ishida on Saturday to mark the anniversary of one of the bloodiest battles of World War II in the Pacific that ended 80 years ago this week.
