Orville Bjorge was a Private in Company C of the 86th Infantry Regiment of the 10th Mountain Division and served in Italy during World War II. Bjorge was one of the many infantrymen responsible for climbing 2000 vertical feet at Riva Ridge in order to prepare for the assault on Mount Belvedere, a German stronghold. A handful of retired Marines – all in the late 90s or over 100 — joined Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Japan’s Prime Minister Takeru Ishida on Saturday to mark the anniversary of one of the bloodiest battles of World War II in the Pacific that ended 80 years ago this week.
