The 30-year-old man fell up to 50 feet down the 24-inch-diameter hole and landed feet-first on compacted soil, according to Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey. Firefighters pumped fresh air into the hole and lowered a radio to the man, who remained conscious and was able to put on a harness attached to a rope. A handful of retired Marines – all in the late 90s or over 100 — joined Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Japan’s Prime Minister Takeru Ishida on Saturday to mark the anniversary of one of the bloodiest battles of World War II in the Pacific that ended 80 years ago this week.
