Patricia Smith, D-Baton Rouge, gets a hug from Jada Delpit, granddaughter of Joe Delpit, who served in the House four years ago, during opening day at the Louisiana legislature in Baton Rouge, La. During a heated May debate on the Louisiana House floor about removing Confederate monuments, Smith urged her colleagues to reject a bill she argued had empowered white supremacists. Smith received 105 emails alone, almost all favoring a proposal by her Republican colleague Thomas Carmody that would have erected obstacles to tearing down such monuments.
