Authorities say two women were killed while climbing an icy canyon on the mountain. A helicopter crew spotted the bodies Monday, Oct. 28, 2019 at an elevation of about 12,000 feet. Because of high winds and steep terrain recovery efforts were delayed until the following day. A handful of retired Marines – all in the late 90s or over 100 — joined Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Japan’s Prime Minister Takeru Ishida on Saturday to mark the anniversary of one of the bloodiest battles of World War II in the Pacific that ended 80 years ago this week.
