In this photo taken Saturday, Feb. 15, 2014, Danilo Berezin, 12, and his 11-year-old friend who gave his name only as Kim, tug their goats home tied to their bicycles as they ride through the mountain village of Bolshoi Kichmai near Sochi, Russia. The Circassians, who live in Bolshoi Kichmai and other villages sprinkled through the Sochi region, are one piece in a patchwork of more than 100 ethnic groups across the Caucasus. That diversity contributes to Russia’s cultural wealth - and has posed challenges to Russian rulers ever since they brought the soaring peaks and seashores of the Caucasus region under the imperial yoke.
