This photo released by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources shows right whale #4057, a 4-year-old male, who was found entangled in rope by a UNC Wilmington aerial survey team flying 40 miles east of Jacksonville, FL on Feb. 16, 2014. The whale was dragging over 100 yards of heavy 9/16" diameter fishing rope. A boat team from Duke University was conducting research nearby and was able to attach a suction cup mounted tag (small white rectangle on whale's back) to temporarily track the whale's movements. Responders from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission arrived shortly before dark and attached a satellite tracking buoy to the fishing rope, so the whale could be relocated and disentangled the following day.
