The photo is one of 88 prints from Bill Cunningham’s 1976-1978 project, “Facades,” featured in an exhibition at the New-York Historical Society, running through June 15, 2014. The images are a whimsical photo essay in which Cunningham posed models in period costumes against famous New York City historic sites of the same vintage. Cunningham and Sherman, a celebrity photographer of famous artists and musicians who died at age 101 last year, were neighbors in the famous Carnegie Hall Studios. A handful of retired Marines – all in the late 90s or over 100 — joined Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Japan’s Prime Minister Takeru Ishida on Saturday to mark the anniversary of one of the bloodiest battles of World War II in the Pacific that ended 80 years ago this week.
