Norton, the mother-in-law of Benjamin L. Cole. Cole is the great-great-great-grandfather of actor Ben Affleck. After Norton died in 1858, Cole was tasked with holding her slaves in trust for his three sons until they reached adulthood. Cole served as local sheriff during the Civil War and public records show he and his wife owned at least one slave of their own. A handful of retired Marines – all in the late 90s or over 100 — joined Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Japan’s Prime Minister Takeru Ishida on Saturday to mark the anniversary of one of the bloodiest battles of World War II in the Pacific that ended 80 years ago this week.
