Winning a contest held by the American Civil Liberties Union, they and four other couples will get logistical and financial help from the ACLU to get married the week of April 28, 2014 in one of the 17 states, plus Washington D.C., which do allow gay marriage. The Smiths had a wedding celebration in Chattanooga on Sunday, March 30, 2014 even though Tennessee doesn't recognize gay marriages, and they plan to be legally wed in a few weeks in Washington, D.C., outside the U.S. Supreme Court building.
