In this March 22, 2015 photo, Yoshiko Shimabukuro, a survivor of the Himeyuri Student Nurse Corps 70 years ago, points to a photo of the First Surgical Cave where she stationed in the battle of Okinawa during WWII at Himeyuri Peace Museum in Itoman on the southern Japanese island of Okinawa. Shimabukuro, head of the museum, who experienced the war’s darkest moments, it’s never been easy to reconcile the hatred of the past with the peace of the present. It took decades for Baker to open up about his experiences. Shimabukuro has spent her life teaching children the horrors of her personal battle and praying for the day when the 20,000 U.S. troops still based on her island will leave, once and for all. Hegseth joins veterans, generals to mark 80th anniversary of battle of Iwo Jima
A handful of retired Marines – all in the late 90s or over 100 — joined Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Japan’s Prime Minister Takeru Ishida on Saturday to mark the anniversary of one of the bloodiest battles of World War II in the Pacific that ended 80 years ago this week.
