The attack by the Islamic State group on a crowded marketplace in Iraq's eastern Diyala province killed over 100 people in one of the deadliest single attacks in the country in the past decade. Army Gen. Raymond T. Odierno told Fox News: "If we had stayed a little more engaged, I think maybe it might have been prevented. I've always believed the United States played the role of honest broker between all the groups, and when we pulled ourselves out, we lost that role." (Associated press)

A handful of retired Marines – all in the late 90s or over 100 — joined Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Japan’s Prime Minister Takeru Ishida on Saturday to mark the anniversary of one of the bloodiest battles of World War II in the Pacific that ended 80 years ago this week.
