ASSOCIATED PRESS Flames engulf the former Alice Mills Rubber Manufacturing Plant in Woonsocket, R.I., on Tuesday night. The eight-alarm fire at the historic mill, built in 1889, forced evacuations and left hundreds without power, officials said. The blaze means a rethinking of development plans for the site, now owned by American Wood Pellet Co., which the city hopes will bring much-needed jobs to the city of 43,000.

A handful of retired Marines – all in the late 90s or over 100 — joined Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Japan’s Prime Minister Takeru Ishida on Saturday to mark the anniversary of one of the bloodiest battles of World War II in the Pacific that ended 80 years ago this week.
