The fourth fight of UFC 101 from the Wachovia Center in Philadelphia was one that many UFC fans were curious about — Thales Leites against Alessio Sakara in a middleweight bout. Leities was the target of the wrath of UFC fans for his performance against Anderson Silva, when he chose a strategy of fighting on his back for the entire fight, which failed miserably.
Leites may be done in UFC. Both fighters turned in a lackluster effort for three rounds, bringing a chorus of boos from the crowd, particuarly when Leities laid on his back near the end of round three and just waited for Sakara to come at him. Neither one may get another UFC fight again, based on their performance, which was so bad that the referee stepped in with less than two minutes left in round three to urge both fighters to start fighting. Sakara (18-7) won a split decision, which fans cheered not because he had done so well, but because they didn’t want Leities (14-3) to get the victory.
The next fight had a little more action, with John Howard going up against Tamdan McCrory in a welterweight contest. Howard (12-4) edged the taller fighter with good leg kicks and a strong ground game, and slammed McCrory (12-3) to the mat several times in gaining a split decision.
Pay-per-view time is about the start, baby, and the arena is like a Flyers seventh game in the playoffs.
