Aneesh Chopra, the country’s first Chief Technology Officer under President Barack Obama, is officially running for lieutenant governor in Virginia in 2013, becoming the first Democrat to take the plunge into the race.
“We live in a time of profound change,” Mr. Chopra said in a statement announcing his candidacy. “In our communities, our Commonwealth and our country, people are looking for pragmatic solutions that address our biggest problems, create opportunities and improve our lives.”
Mr. Chopra served as Virginia’s Secretary of Technology under Gov. Tim Kaine, who is running for U.S. Senate this year. He has raised more than $500,000 since April through an exploratory group called Innovate Virginia.
On the Republican side, Del. L. Scott Lingamfelter, Prince William Republican, Sen. Stephen H. Martin, Chesterfield Republican, and Prince William County Board of Supervisors Chairman Corey A. Stewart are all running. Another potential candidate is Pete Snyder, who is heading up the GOP’s coordinated campaign in the state for the 2012 elections.
