Republican Senate candidate Ron Johnson of Wisconsin has outraised Sen. Russ Feingold by about $280,000 in the latest campaign finance reporting period.
Johnson, who owns a plastics business, reported raising nearly $1.2 million from July 1 through Aug. 25, and contributed an additional $2.9 million of his own money during the period. His campaign spent more than $3.4 million over the period and had a cash on hand total of more than $1.6 million.

Johnson, a political neophyte and favorite of the “tea party” movement, is expected to easily win the Sept. 14 GOP primary and provide a strong challenge to Feingold in the Nov. 2 general election. Recent polls show that the race is too close to call.
