Rand Paul, the Republican candidate for a U.S. Senate seat in Kentucky, told a national audience Sunday that his campaign has yet to attack challenger Jack Conway because the Democrat is so far behind in the race. But two days later, the campaign is up with its first negative TV ad against Mr. Conway.
During a Fox News Sunday debate, moderator Chris Wallace said to Mr Paul: “Quite frankly, you say very little about [state] Attorney General Conway on the campaign trail. You say nothing about him in your ads. Now’s your chance, sir.”
Said Mr. Paul: ”We’re waiting for him to catch up a little bit in the polls, then we may refer to him more.”
An average of polls showed Mr. Paul ahead by roughly 6 percentage points when the campaign posted the ad Tuesday.
“I need Conway in Washington because I know I can count on Conway to vote for more spending and more debt,” says the ad narrator pretending to be President Obama.
A GOP source confirmed Wednesday this was the first negative ad, “if you call pointing out facts negative.”
