The Patriots are almost machine-like in their ability to put up 30 points every week. They’ve done it 10 times in 13 tries this season, and they did it again Sunday when they beat the Redskins, 34-27.
The Redskins, on the other hand, are almost machine-like in their ability not to score 30 points. I didn’t realize how bad it was, though – this disparity between the two offenses – until I started to do a little research. Consider:
SEE RELATED:● Since 2007, when the Patriots nearly pulled off a perfect season, Tom Brady and Co. have scored 30 or more points in 44 games, best in the league. In that same span, the Redskins have scored 30 or more points five times, worst in the league. Here are the Top and Bottom 5s in this department:
Top 5
44 Patriots
35 Packers
35 Saints
29 Chargers
28 Giants
Note: Eagles, 26 (7th), Cowboys 25 (8th).
Bottom 5
5 Redskins
6 Rams
9 49ers
10 Bucs
10 Browns
● Even if you stretch it back to 2001, the beginning of the Patriots dynasty, the results are the same. See for yourself:
Top 5
72 Patriots
67 Packers
63 Colts
59 Saints
55 Chargers
Note: Eagles 51 (6th), Giants 42 (10th), Cowboys 39 (16th).
Bottom 5
19 Redskins
20 Browns
22 Lions
23 Bucs
24 Texans (And they didn’t begin operations until 2004!)
So on one level, at least, Sunday’s game came down to the Patriots’ ability to score 30 points (nobody’s better) and the Redskins’ inability to score 30 points (nobody’s worse).
These rankings are also a reflection, of course, of the Pats having one coach (Bill Belichick) and one Hall of Fame-bound quarterback (Brady) all that time – and the Redskins having five coaches and who-knows-how-many quarterbacks.
The bottom line: Not only have the Redskins been one of the losingest franchises in the NFL in recent years, they’ve arguably been the boringest franchise (on the field, at least). Five 30-point offensive performances in almost five seasons? Good gracious.
