MORGANTOWN, W.Va. —- A few personnel items of note from Maryland’s 31-21 loss to West Virginia …

* Maryland used 49 players, a season-high and its most since last November’s loss to Notre Dame.

* The Terps used their fourth different starting lineup on offense in as many games and third starting defense of the season.

* Maryland started five defensive backs for the first time since the 2010 Military Bowl.

* Tailback Brandon Ross and cornerback Isaac Goins made their first career starts.

* Linebacker Marcus Whitfield made his first start of the season and the sixth of his career.

* Ross and fellow redshirt freshman Andrew Zeller made their career debuts. Ross had 52 yards on 20 carries. Zeller received work on a few series at right guard.

* Senior Kenneth Tate had four tackles (one for loss) and a pass breakup in his first game of the season.

* Terps who played against West Virginia who did not see time against Connecticut: Defensive end Justin Anderson, quarterback Devin Burns, fullback Tyler Cierski, Ross, Tate and Zeller.

* Terps who played last week but did not see time against West Virginia: Defensive end Keith Bowers (injured), wideout Kerry Boykins (injured), center Evan Mulrooney, linebacker Avery Thompson and guard Peter White (did not travel).

Mulrooney made a one-play cameo last week when Sal Conaboy‘s helmet popped off. Thompson shifted down to third-string at strong-side linebacker with Tate’s return.
