Maryland’s Desmond Kearse was granted a medical hardship by the NCAA, football coach Randy Edsall said.
“His went through,” Edsall said. “He was granted the extra year.”

Players can compete in 30 percent of a team’s games, so long as they’re all in the first half of a season, to be eligible for a waiver. Generally, players who have already redshirted for non-medical reasons are much less likely to receive a waiver than those who have yet to redshirt.
The 6-foot-1, 180-pound Kearse is listed third on Maryland’s spring depth chart at STAR, a linebacker/safety hybrid position where Kenny Tate will start.
