CHAPEL HILL, N.C. —- The subplot revealed by Sunday’s plus-minus data has everything to do with Maryland star Jordan Williams.
When the sophomore was on the floor, the Terrapins actually held an six-point advantage on North Carolina.
SEE RELATED:Of course, there were those nine minutes (per the box score) when Williams wasn’t on the floor and Maryland couldn’t match up as effectively with the Tar Heels’ size. A minus-17 margin in such a small period of time stands out.
Here’s the breakdown of how North Carolina exploited the stints when Williams, who was effective (16 points and 19 rebounds) despite dealing with a stomach virus, was stuck on the bench.
FIRST HALF
Left at 12:14 tied 13-13, returned at 9:37 down 20-15 —- UNC 7-2 over 2:37
Left at 5:46 down 31-27, returned at 2:32 down 39-29 —- UNC 8-2 over 3:14
Left at 0:45 down 41-31, returned after half down 43-31 —- UNC 2-0 over 0:45
SECOND HALF
Left at 12:02 down 62-51, returned at 11:10 down 64-51 —- UNC 2-0 over 0:52
Left at 7:53 down 70-57, returned at 6:42 down 74-59 —- UNC 4-2 over 1:11
Left at 0:40 down 87-76, score remained same to end —- 0-0 over 0:40
So to review, North Carolina held a 23-6 edge in the 9:19 when Williams wasn’t in the game. And that says everything necessary about how much Maryland needed him against the super-sized Tar Heels.
