Obviously, yesterday’s rundown of Maryland coach Gary Williams‘ 19 victories over top-five teams while at Maryland was a display of his and his teams’ ability to win big games.

It also wasn’t complete, since it didn’t include Williams’ earlier stops.

In all, he owns 22 victories over top-five opponents, including one from his Boston College days and two from his time at Ohio State.

And just for fun, here’s the rundown of the coaches were were victimized:

(EDIT: Forgot to include Bill Self originally; he lost to Maryland while coaching Illinois in 2001)

Opportunity matters here. Yes, Williams has gotten the better of Coach K at times, but it’s not like there weren’t plenty of shots at a top-five Duke team over the years. Gary is 6-22 against Krzyzewski when Duke is in the top five, which means he’s gotten his (especially after an 0-10 start) but hasn’t exactlyhad Coach K’s number.

Which is why Gary’s 5-3 record against Roy Williams in such situations is so impressive, and further reason people like me shouldn’t be surprised when Maryland defeats North Carolina regardless of the situation.
