Want proof things are down to the nitty-gritty of camp?
The first position battle Ralph Friedgen mentioned today was who would be the backup to the backup cornerbacks.
SEE RELATED:No, really.
“We’re trying to find out who the fifth guy is,” he said.
What this essentially means is the Terps have settled on their second-stringers. Those would be sophomores Cameron Chism and Trenton Hughes, both unknown quantities in actual games.
“We think [Nolan] Carroll and [Anthony] Wiseman are two solid firsts and the other two guys aren’t too far behind,” Friedgen said.
So who’s left? Here’s who:
* Richard Taylor, a sixth-year player who you can read more about in tomorrow’s dead-tree edition.
* Michael Carter, who played sparingly last year.
* Brandon Jackson-Mills, who has yet to see the field as he enters his fourth season in the program.
* Travis Hawkins, a true freshman.
As for the eventual winner here, it’s hard to say. It might not be worth burning Hawkins’ redshirt to be a fifth corner, and Taylor will probably be a special teams option regardless of his place in this pecking order.
For now, consider it a mystery that will linger into the third week of camp.
