Odds and ends from Ralph Friedgen on Sunday’s scrimmage…
* Eric Franklin could be the Terps’ fifth safety. He played extensively with Jamari McCollough out and led the team with eight tackles —- and also picked off Chris Turner.
SEE RELATED:“We think he will develop into a good safety for us this year,” Friedgen said.
* Tony Logan is the favorite at punt returner.
But it’s not done yet.
Friedgen was nearly set to make a call there. But then he muffed a punt late in the scrimmage.
“In the [mock] scrimmage the other day, he fair caught everything,” Friedgen said. “I said, ‘You know, it’s tag-off. If you’re going to try to show me something, now’s the time.’ I had a talk with him before the scrimmage. The ones he fair-caught today, I think he made good decisions.”
* Among the younger offensive linemen who “are getting better”: Bennett Fulper, Justin Gilbert and R.J. Dill. Also Maurice Hampton, two false starts notwithstanding.
* Friedgen on the defensive tackle reserves: “That’s an important piece of the puzzle for us.”
* Richard Taylor had the special teams play of the day, beating a double team as the gunner on the punt team and wrapping up Logan for a loss.
“I thought it was a hell of a play by him,” Friedgen said. “I’m going to look at the two guys who were doubling him, to be honest with you. That shouldn’t happen.”
* Defensive end Carl Russell left the scrimmage with a twisted ankle.
