A former Fauquier County high school football coach who solicited nude photos from students is out of jail after receiving a suspended sentence.
Gary Robert Hix, who was a teacher and coach at Kettle Run High School in Nokesville, Virginia, pleaded guilty in November to using a communications system to facilitate certain offenses involving children, a felony. He was sentenced to five years in prison on Wednesday, but with four years, three months and 15 days of it suspended.
Since Hix had spent 261 days in jail, he was released after sentencing. Hix will be on supervised probation and is required to register as a sex offender in Virginia.
He was first arrested in June for using Snapchat to get the nude photos from students, including football players, the Fauquier County sheriff’s office said.
In addition to his own arrest and termination, Hix’s conduct led Kettle Run’s head coach at the time, Charles Porterfield, to resign from his position, according to Fauquier Now.
Hix told the court before his sentencing that “it was never my intention to hurt anyone,” according to the Fauquier Times.
